Hannes Wittspeck is in the fifth grade in the village of Boddenhagen on the Greifswald Bodden. He is friends with Carolin, who is the same age, and eventually falls in love with her. He compares her to a white cloud in the sky and keeps remembering her when he looks at the clouds. Although the class teacher accepts first love, since she was only twelve years old when she first fell in love, Hannes now often receives criticism for being inattentive in class or disturbing it with defiant answers. Carolin's mother approves of the relationship, while Hannes's mother tends to react irritably, although his father wants to help him as a friend. Soon, Hannes experiences his first heartbreak, as Carolin, an active member of the Young Pioneers, often spends her free time with Benno.
