Hartmut Mackowiak is in shock. After 30 years of marriage, his wife leaves him for another man. Suddenly, he has to completely reorganize his life, and yet the grumpy cab driver prefers his peace and quiet, entrenching himself behind a shell of prejudice, self-sufficiency and skeptical rejection of anything foreign or new. So it doesn't suit him at all when six-year-old Hayat suddenly turns up all alone in his cab, speaking no German and now dependent on his help. All attempts to get rid of her fail. And although he is trying to persuade his wife to return, he finally sets out to find Hayat's mother. In the process, it dawns on him: perhaps it is not he who is helping Hayat, but she who is helping him...
