Starting with the day Pauline (Clémence Poésy) offers him her help on the bus, the stubborn Matthew Morgan (Michael Caine), exhausted by life, stumbles back into happiness. The young woman's disarming zest for life and unwavering optimism capture his old heart, and the quiet professor unexpectedly becomes a student of life. On their everyday adventures of walks through Paris, lunches in the park, and trips to the countryside, the unusual couple discovers numerous treasures: Friendship, companionship, romance - and the meaning of family. Pauline looks to Matthew for the familial security she was forced to lose so early, while Matthew becomes closer to his son Miles (Justin Kirk) for the first time in a long time thanks to Pauline. What begins as an attempt by Miles and his sister Karen (Gillian Anderson) to bring Matthew home to the United States leads to developments in Miles' own life that he never expected. Just in time, father and son learn to respect each other again, let bygones be bygones, and face the future - and both find love and hope again, each in their own way.
